Wörth am Rhein - The Mercedes-Benz Wörth plant recently celebrated the opening of the new charging park for electrically powered trucks supplying the plant with the commissioning of six new fast-charging stations for trucks in the presence of Steffen Weiß, Mayor of the town of Wörth. Together with Andreas Bachhofer, Head of the Wörth site and Mercedes-Benz Trucks Production, Steffen Weiß gave the official starting signal for the truck charging park on the factory premises, illustrated by a symbolic connection of power cables.
The construction of the fast-charging park at the Wörth site is an important milestone in the further electrification of road freight transport: Mercedes-Benz Trucks is also focusing on electric trucks in its own supply chain and aims to electrify 100 percent of delivery traffic into the largest truck plant by the end of 2026. Since the start of the project, 20 percent of the deliveries of production materials ordered directly by Daimler Truck have already been electrified. An integral part of Mercedes-Benz Trucks' future inbound logistics concept for emission-free delivery traffic is also the establishment of a plant-owned charging infrastructure at the Wörth site. It is a further example of the Daimler Truck brand's TruckCharge offering, which covers topics such as consulting, infrastructure and operation relating to e-infrastructure and the charging of electric trucks. The establishment of an in-house charging infrastructure ensures that haulage companies can charge their trucks during waiting and unloading times. Eight charging points have already been installed and put into operation on the factory premises in Wörth. This offer is now being supplemented by the new fast-charging park with six additional charging stations, with the option of adding two more charging stations that meet the requirements for future megawatt charging needs. The new fast-charging stations are located in the immediate vicinity of the plant entrance at Gate 2, through which delivery traffic enters the Wörth plant.
Andreas Bachhofer: “Of the eight planned TruckCharge charging stations, six 400 kW fast-charging stations will go into operation immediately and will supply trucks with electricity while they are parked in the truck waiting area. Further charging stations are planned at key points for delivery traffic in the immediate vicinity of production at the Wörth plant. The charging process can therefore take place during loading and unloading, allowing us to deliver goods to the plant as efficiently as possible.”
Steffen Weiß: “For the town of Wörth am Rhein, this fast-charging park sends out a signal. While for many citizens, refueling new vehicles with diesel fuel from the plant has been a familiar sight around our filling stations for years, the 'refueling process' is now increasingly being shifted to the plant in the age of electromobility.”
In addition to the TruckCharge charging stations, a new transformer station with an output of 6 megawatts was also built to supply power to the high-performance fast-charging stations. This is connected to the plant network via a new 20,000-volt high-voltage line.
Since 2022, there has already been a charging park for customers at the Branch Information Center (BIC) in Wörth am Rhein, in the immediate vicinity of the plant. Here, e-truck customers can test charging stations and charging concepts from various manufacturers and work out customized charging solutions for their applications with the experts from Mercedes-Benz Trucks on site.
About the Mercedes-Benz plant in Wörth
The largest truck assembly plant of Mercedes-Benz Trucks in Wörth am Rhein was founded in 1963. Since the beginning, around 4.4 million trucks have been built here. Today, these are the Actros, Arocs and Atego series. The Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks Econic, Unimog and Zetros are also built in Wörth. Series production of the battery-electric Mercedes-Benz eActros 300/400 for distribution transport started in 2021. This was followed in 2022 by the second Mercedes-Benz eEconic electric series truck for municipal use. In October 2023, the eActros 600 for long-distance transport was presented to the global public. It will go into series production in Wörth at the end of November 2024. With around 10,000 employees, the Mercedes-Benz plant in Wörth is the second-largest employer in Rhineland-Palatinate.
TruckCharge - new Daimler Truck brand to bundle e-infrastructure and charging services in Europe
In order to make e-mobility simple and profitable for its customers beyond the purchase of electric trucks, Daimler Truck launched the new TruckCharge brand in Europe at the start of the IAA. Under this name, the company combines its services relating to e-infrastructure and the charging of electric trucks, i.e. consulting and infrastructure as well as the operation of electrified depots for freight forwarders and industrial companies.
